DALLAS — Camryn Carreon is in the top 20 individuals and the UTSA women's golf team is in the top 10 after the opening day of the Trinity Forest Invitational, which got underway on a cold and windy Monday at Trinity Forest Golf Club (par 72/6,460 yards).
The field of 83 golfers was scheduled to play 36 holes but the second round was suspended due to darkness with several players still on the course. The second round will resume Tuesday morning followed immediately by the final 18 holes.
Carreon is unofficially in a tie for 17th place after posting a pair of 4-over-par scorecards. The all-conference performwer from San Antonio had two birdies on the back nine in the first round before writing down four on the same side — including three in a row on Nos. 14-16 — in the afternoon round. She is just two shots out of the top 10 in the individual standings.
Meanwhile, Nicole Polivchak is in the top 10 while playing outside the UTSA lineup. The senior fired a 76 in the opening round and then used a trio of birdies to post a 74 in the afternoon, putting her unofficially in a tie for ninth at 6-over 150.
Ana Gonzalez has a share of 26th place at 10-over par. The super senior from Mexico posted a 78 in the morning round and currently is 4-over par with one hole remaining in the second round.
Hannah Holzmann is one shot behind Gonzalez in a tie for 32nd at 11-over par. The senior from San Antonio bounced back from a 79 in the opening round with a 76 that featured a birdie on the 546-yard, par-5 fifth hole.
Hunter Nugent and Morgan Ellison round out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 46th at 14-over. Nugent is 5-over behind three birdies with one hole left in her second 18, while Ellison shot a 77 in the morning and is 9-over in round two.
In the team race, UTSA is in 10th at 39-over after opening with a 310. The Roadrunners are one shot ahead of New Mexico State and only one stroke behind a tie for eighth between Tulane and host SMU.
No. 23 Texas Tech leads the team standings at 19-over par. New Mexico State's Alison Gastelum and Tulsa's Lovisa Gunnar have a share of the individual lead at 2-under 142.
