UTSA in title contention after opening day of Maryb S. Kauth Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — Behind four players in the top 20, the UTSA women's golf team is in second place after the first day of the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational, which teed off on Tuesday at San Antonio Country Club (par 72/6,131 yards).  
Coming off the Chattanooga Classic team title last week, the Roadrunners trail Sam Houston by only one stroke after the first 36 holes, as UTSA carded rounds of 6-under 282 followed by a 298 to stand at 4-over 580 with 18 holes remaining. UIW is in third (591), followed by Oral Roberts (593) and UNLV (595) in the nine-team field.
 
Individually, Camryn Carreon has sole possession of second place at 3-under 141. The junior from San Antonio fired a 2-under 70 in the morning round on the strength of three birdies. The all-conference performer followed that with a 71 behind four more birdies in the afternoon in warm temperatures. She is five shots off the pace of 8-under 136 set by Sam Houston's Jennifer Herbst.
 
Nicole Polivchak opened the Roadrunners' annual home tournament with a UTSA career-best 69. Her bogey-free first round featured a trio of birdies, and the super senior tacked on two more as part of a 75 in the afternoon to settled into a tie for sixth place at even-par 144.
 
Ana Gonzalez has a share of 12th place at 2-over 146. The super senior fired a 2-under 70 that featured 16 pars and a pair of birdies before turning in a 76 with four more circled numbers in the afternoon.
 
Hannah Holzmann is in a deadlock for 18th at 5-over 149. The hometown senior recorded four birdies en route to a 1-over 73 in the opening 18 holes before a 76 in round two.
 
Morgan Ellison is in a tie for 32nd after posting a 76-77—153 with four total birdies on the day.
 
Playing outside the UTSA lineup, Hunter Nugent is in a tie for fourth place at 1-under 143. The junior transfer from Canada fired an even-par 72 followed by a 1-under 71, posting four birdies in each round.
 
Meanwhile, Katia Mexsen has a share of 32nd at 9-over 153 (74-79) while also competing as an individual.
 
The final round is slated for a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Wednesday. Admission is free for spectators.
