SAN ANTONIO — Bashiru Abdullahi registered a record-setting performance in the 110-meter hurdles and Jemuel Miller completed the season sweep of the league's triple jump crowns to help the UTSA men finish fourth at the Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which wrapped up on Sunday at Park West Athletics Complex.
Abdullahi and Miller joined Jack Turner, who captured his second straight decathlon title on Friday, to help lead the Roadrunners to eight total podium finishes and a fourth-place finish in the team standings. UTSA scored 103 points, the seventh time they have surpassed the century mark in eight C-USA Outdoor meets, to end up eight ahead of North Texas and trailing only Charlotte (179.5), UTEP (124) and Rice (121) in the 10-team field.
Abdullahi smashed the UTSA, meet and facility records in claiming the 110m hurdles gold for the first time as a Roadrunner. The junior from Benin City, Nigeria, sped to a 13.53 clocking to nip Charlotte's Justin Leaston (13.55) to the finish line and break the 18-year-old C-USA Outdoor standard of 13.68 set by David Payne of Cincinnati in 2004. Abdullahi's win gives him a sweep of the high hurdles crowns this year and it marks his third C-USA gold, as he also took top honors in the 60m hurdles in 2020.
Miller and Grant Szalek finished 1-2 in the triple jump earlier in the day to contribute 18 points toward the team tally.
Miller completed the first sweep of the C-USA Indoor and Outdoor triple jump titles since 2019 by skipping to a wind-aided and season-best mark of 16.07 meters (52-8.75). The freshman from Barbados took the lead on his second attempt with a facility-record mark of 15.76m (51-8.5) and then posted an improvement to a 15.89m (52-1.75) on his third try. After a pair of fouls in the finals, the first-team indoor All-American skipped to his top mark of the day on his final jump, which would have been an improvement on the Park West standard but was aided by a 2.1 meters-per-second tailwind. Miller struck gold in the C-USA Indoor triple jump (16.09m/52-9.5) and later broke the school record with a 16.17m (53-0.75) effort in placing sixth at the NCAA Championships.
Szalek secured the triple jump silver medal with a wind-aided mark of 15.71m (51-6.5), which came on his second trip down the runway and also had a 2.1 wind reading. The senior from Perth, Australia, also posted jumps of 15.49m (50-10) and 15.61m (51-2.75) on his final two tries en route to collecting his second medal of the meet (high jump bronze) and seventh of his UTSA career.
In other Sunday action in the field, Paul Bouey added three points with a sixth-place finish in the shot put, measuring 16.41m (53-10.25).
The Roadrunners started the running finals with a silver-medal showing in the 4x100-meter relay. Dennis Phillips, Diego Pettorossi, Trevion McCalla, Jose Garcia passed the baton to a time of 39.57 for a narrow runner-up finish behind North Texas' 39.56. That foursome broke the school record earlier this year with a 39.34 clocking to win the UTSA Invitational and also broke 40 seconds in crossing first at Texas Relays in 39.95.
Following Abdullahi's victory in the hurdles, Mike Roth finished fourth in the 400m with a 47.79, while Logan Masters crossed eighth in 49.87 to tack on six more points.
Pettorossi and Phillips then placed 6-7 in the 100m with times of 10.37 and 10.41, respectively, before Gabriel Green added a pair of points with a seventh-place time of 53.34 in the 400m hurdles.
Pettorossi collected the bronze medal in the 200m with a 20.80 clocking, while Phillips and McCalla finished sixth (21.07) and seventh (21.10), respectively, tacking on 11 more points
UTSA closed out the meet by placing fourth in the 4x400m relay, as the foursome of Noah Rhodes, Mike Roth, Dennis Phillips, Logan Masters posted a 3:16.82.
