EUGENE, Ore. — UTSA freshman Jemuel Miller became the first Roadrunner to earn All-America honors in the men's triple jump twice in the same year with a 10th-place finish on Friday at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field.
A first-team All-American indoors this year, Miller added a second-team certificate to his collection with his top-16 finish on the third day of the national meet. The Bridgetown, Barbados, native skipped to a mark of 16.01 meters (52-6.5) to land in 10th place in the 24-man field. He ended up just ahead of 11th-place finisher R'Lazon Brumfield of Tennessee State (15.97m/52-4.75) and also placed in front of jumpers from Florida State, Iowa, LSU, Miami, Texas and Texas Tech in the competition won by TCU's Chengetayi Mapaya with a 17.26m (56-7.5) effort.
After fouling on his first try, Miller moved into 10th after unleashing his top measurement of the day on his second attempt. The 2021 Conference USA Indoor and Outdoor gold medalist fouled again on his third trip down the runway, just missing a shot at the final three rounds but still securing his spot in the UTSA record book as the first athlete to achieve All-America status in the event at both NCAA championship meets during the same calendar year.
Miller earned first-team All-America accolades in March after finishing sixth at the NCAA Indoor with a school-record mark of 16.17m (53-0.75). He joins outdoor school record holder Devon Bond, who finished fifth at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor and 16th a year later, as the only UTSA outdoor triple jump All-Americans.
Miller is the third Roadrunner to collect an All-America certificate this week. On Wednesday, Bashiru Abdullahi picked up second-team honors after a 15th-place showing in the semifinal round of the 110-meter hurdles after he clocked a time of 13.69 seconds, while Christiaan Le Roux collected his first career All-America plaudit with a 22nd-place effort in the long jump after he leaped 7.31 meters (23-11.75).
Following Friday's action, the UTSA men now boast 19 All-Americans who have combined to collect 30 first team, second team or honorable mention certificates.
Danielle Spence will conclude action at the NCAA Outdoor for the Roadrunners on Saturday, as the senior from Jamaica will participate in the women's triple jump at 4:50 p.m. CT.
