SAN ANTONIO – UTSA got its fall tennis season underway this past weekend, as it competed in the Louisiana Lafayette Hidden Dual in Lake Charles, La.
The Roadrunners were one of four teams in the weekend field, as UTSA opened the three-day slate of action with host-school Louisiana Lafayette on Friday. Against the Ragin' Cajuns, UTSA fielded four doubles teams, seeing Tomás Pinho and Tiago Torres claim a 6-4 win. The two teams then went on to compete in singles as a total of eight matches were played. Sebastian Rodriguez (6-3, 6-3), Alan Magadan (6-3, 7-6), Pinho (7-6, 6-7, 7-1), Garrett Skelly (6-3, 6-1) and Andrew Keene (6-4, 6-4) all notched solo wins, giving UTSA a 5-3 edge over ULL.
On the second day of action, UTSA faced a different Louisiana school, the Tulane Green Wave. Again, the two schools began with four doubles matches with UTSA claiming one of the four. This time it was Magadan and Rodriguez who earned the doubles win for the Roadrunners, winning the match 6-2. UTSA and Tulane then competed in eight singles matches, splitting the wins at four apiece. Magadan (6-2, 6-1), Rodriguez (6-0, 6-2), Torres (6-1, 6-4) and Miguel Alonso (6-2, 6-2) picked up singles wins on Saturday for the Roadrunners.
The third and final day of competition pitted the Roadrunners against the South Alabama Jaguars. Pinho and Torres (6-3), as well as Skelly and Keene (6-4), earned doubles wins for UTSA prior to the singles portion of the day. The Roadrunners and Jaguars then competed in six singles matches with UTSA claiming five of the six. Rodriguez (6-3, 6-3), Magadan (7-6, 3-6, 6-3), Torres (6-3, 3-6, 6-3), Pinho (6-2, 6-3) and Danijal Muminovic (7-5, 7-5) were the Roadrunners who earned solo victories.
"I'm thrilled with the way our guys played in this first fall tournament," coach Avdeyev said. "I've seen some very high-level action from our top guys. Our top two players went undefeated in singles this weekend, as both Sebastian Rodriguez and Alan Magadan went 3-0. They did so by competing against top spots which is very hard to do. Going into the weekend we had a few students injured so I am pleased to see our team compete that hard getting multiple singles and doubles wins. Big credit to our guys for their showings as some had not practiced for several days. Overall, I'm happy with what I saw this weekend and I've made some notes on what we need to improve for the next weekend."

UTSA will host the Jauer Roadrunner Invitational this weekend with action beginning Friday, Sept. 23 at 8:30 a.m. and ending Sunday afternoon. The Roadrunner Invite is an ITA-sanctioned tournament that will feature 13 total teams. Besides the Roadrunners, Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Miami, SMU, Rice, Abilene Christian, UTRGV, TAMUCC, UIW and Oral Roberts will also be competing.
