MIAMI – The UTSA soccer team struck first to lead to a 1-1 draw with Florida International on Sunday morning at FIU Soccer Stadium.
"Results are extremely difficult to come by on the road," head coach Derek Pittman said. "It requires complete focus and effort to carry out the game plan. Unfortunately, we didn't do enough against a spirited FIU team. We will take the draw and keep getting better with each game."
With its second straight draw, the Roadrunners earned another point to have five points in the C-USA standings. The Roadrunners led the Panthers by 15 shots (six on net) to 11 shots (four on target) through the entire match. FIU had a couple more opportunities as they were awarded three corner kicks and won nine foul calls, while UTSA countered with two corners and four won foul calls.
Starting goalkeeper Jil Schneider recorded three saves. Marlee Fray and Lexi Bolton led the team with three shots (one on goal) each. Kendall Kloza, Sarina Russ and Sasjah Dade played the entire match.
Through the first half, the Roadrunners outshot the Panthers by seven shots to five shots. In the first 20 minutes, Bolton fired off two shots but was unable to execute, while FIU recorded two shots of their own. In the 23rd minute, Alissa Stewart found the back of the net to give UTSA the 1-0 advantage. Each team notched three more shots before the half, but it was the Roadrunners that carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Within the first five minutes of the second half, UTSA came in full speed and fired off four shots. The Panthers found the equalizer as Kim Schneider scored in the 56th minute to tie the score at 1-1. The Roadrunners found some more opportunities after FIU's goal as they earned a corner kick and recorded four more shots. The Panthers countered with five more shots and a corner kick. UTSA and FIU battled until the end, drawing a 1-1 tie.
UTSA's record now sits at 6-2-3 overall (1-1-2 in C-USA action), while FIU now sits at 2-5-2 overall (0-2-2 in C-USA play). The draw gives the Roadrunners one more point to have five points overall in the conference standings.
