NORMAN, Okla. — Bolstered by sub-70 scorecards from Morgan Ellison and Lauren Rios, UTSA registered a 3-under-par team score in the final round of the Schooner Fall Classic, which concluded on Monday at Belmar Golf Club.
The Roadrunners carded a 277 on the 6,112-yard, par 70 layout, a two-shot improvement over their opening-round 279 on Saturday. UTSA finished in 13th place with a 12-over 852, three strokes ahead of Illinois and 13 in front of Texas State. The Roadrunners were only two shots out of the top 10 in the team race won by Florida State (-12).
Ellison recorded four birdies en route to posting the best score of her young collegiate career. Starting on No. 10, the sophomore from Peachtree City, Georgia, tallied a pair of birdies on the back side where she carded a 1-under 33 before writing down a three on the 387-yard, par-4 first and a two on the 169-yard, par-3 eighth holes as part of a 2-under 34 on the front. She registered 10 birdies for the tournament and finished in a tie for 49th at 6-over 216 (73-76-67).
Lauren Rios joined Ellison in that deadlock for 49th at 6-over 216 (72-76-68). The freshman out of Coppell High School fired her top collegiate round on the strength of five birdies, three to start her day on Nos. 10-12 and two to close out the 68.
Meanwhile, Camryn Carreon led all Roadrunners with an even-par 210 to tie for 20th place. After opening with a 68-72—140, the senior from San Antonio posted a 70 on the final day behind a trio of birdies, finishing with eight for the event to go along with a team-high 39 pars and an eagle, which she posted in Sunday's round.
Daniela Abonce turned in her second straight 72 on Monday after opening with a 70. The freshman from Veracruz, Mexico, matched Carreon with eight birdies for the event and ended up with a share of 42nd place at 4-over 214.
Olivia Williams posted a 72 on the final day with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 8-9. The freshman from England tied for 66th with a 10-over 220 that included a season-best 69 in the opening round.
The Roadrunners will return to the Sooner State to compete in the Dale McNamara Invitational on Oct. 10-11 in Broken Arrow.
