TULSA, Okla. — Keyed by a 1-under-par scorecard turned in by Hunter Bott, the UTSA men's golf team is in a tie for third place after the first round of The Clerico, which got underway on Monday at Oaks Country Club (par 71/7,000 yards).
Severe weather in the area delayed play for several hours on the first day, forcing the postponement of the second round to Tuesday.
Bott fired a 70 and David Harrison carded an even-par 71 to help the Roadrunners post a 292, good for a share of third with South Alabama and host Oral Roberts. That group is only two shots behind second-place Kansas City and five strokes in front of Texas State and Northern Iowa in the 12-team field led by New Mexico (280).
Bott's 70 featured four birdies, as the senior wrote down a three on the 401-yard fourth hole, a two on the 209-yard 11th and threes on Nos. 17-18. The Montgomery native is in a four-way tie for fifth place in the individual race and only two shots off the pace of 3-under 68 set by Garrison Smith of New Mexico State and Joshuaa Robards of Kansas City.
Harrison is just one stroke behind his teammate as part of a five-way deadlock for ninth place. The senior from Trophy Club had birdies on the 553-yard, par-5 third, the 435-yard, par-4 eighth and the 447-yard, par-4 17th holes.
Christian Fanfelle registered a 75 that was headlined by a trio of birdies and the senior from San Antonio is in a tie for 29th place, while Jack Wehman provided the other counting score with a 76 to settle into a tie for 36th. Brayden Bare rounds out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 61st (79).
The second round is scheduled for Tuesday.
