NEW YORK CITY — Jemuel Miller soared to victory in the long jump, Mike Roth won the 400 meters and Michael Campbell collected gold in the weight throw to headline Friday action for the UTSA track & field teams at the Scarlet Knights Open at Armory Track.
The trio of wins paced a total of eight top-three finishes for the Roadrunners on the opening day of the two-day meet in the Big Apple.
Miller posted an indoor personal best to claim top honors in the Championship Division of the men's long jump. The sophomore All-American bounced back from opening with a foul, followed by a mark of 6.61 meters (21-8.25) that put him in 13th place through two rounds by leaping 7.36m (24-1.75) to move into fourth and earn three more trips down the runway. The Barbados native then broke the sand at 7.63m (25-0.5) to take over first place for good and move into a tie for second on UTSA's all-time performers list, just two centimeters shy of the school record.
UTSA showed off its depth in the long jump, as Miller led a total of seven Roadrunners that placed in the top nine in the event. Dylan James grabbed the bronze medal with a mark of 7.51m (24-7.75), followed closely by All-American Christiaan Le Roux, who placed fourth with a 7.48m (24-6.5) effort. Jack Turner was fifth after marking 7.44m (24-5), while Joel McFarlane (7.26m/23-10), Gabriel Binion (7.25m/23-9.5) and Jacob Jenkins (6.95m/22-9.75) finished 7-9.
Roth sped to a time of 48.21 seconds to cross first in his heat, holding on through 13 more sections of the quarter with what ended up being the top clocking of the day in the College Division of the men's 400m. The sophomore from Canada finished ahead of Penn's Devante Heywood (49.12) and Joshua Babe of Rutgers (49.15) in the 57-man field.
The first win of the weekend went to junior transfer Michael Campbell, who claimed top honors in the College Division of the men's weight throw. Competing not far from his hometown of Bloomfield, Connecticut, he rebounded from a foul on his opening attempt with a 17.79m (58-4.5) measurement to grab first place. He then tossed the implement to a distance of 17.86m (58-7.25) to cushion his lead ahead of runner-up AJ Bailor of Monmouth (16.58m/54-4.75).
The UTSA women also logged four podium showings on Friday.
Oreoluwa Adamson and Ingeborg Gruenwald finished 2-3 in the Championship Division of the long jump. Adamson soared to a 6.05m (19-10.25) mark for a narrow second-place showing behind Princeton's Alexandra Kelly (6.06m/19-10.75), while Gruenwald was third with a leap of 5.84m (19-2).
Alanah Yukich sped to a silver medal in the College Division of the 400m with a 56.19 clocking, good for second in her heat behind Penn's Isabella Whittaker, who was the overall winner in 55.34.
Isabella Simonelli claimed third place in the College Division of the weight throw with a 16.60m (54-5.5) heave, while Acacia Astwood was eighth in the Championship field after measuring 17.00m (55-9.25).
In other action, Marie Duvigneau placed fifth overall and fourth among collegiate competitors in the 400m with a 57.28 clocking, while Sigrid Kleive leaped 5.67m (18-7.25) for fifth in the College Division of the long jump and cleared 1.65m (5-5) for seventh in the high jump.
Saturday's action will start with the shot put at 9 a.m. CT and the first track event — the 60-meter hurdles — is scheduled for 9:45 a.m.
