SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA track & field teams will host the UTSA Invitational on Friday-Saturday, March 17-18, at Park West Athletics Complex. Admission and parking are free.
The two-day annual home meet will get underway at 2 p.m. Friday with the hammer throw, followed by the shot put and javelin in the field. Four distance races — the men's and women's 3,000-meter steeplechase and the women's and men's 5,000 meters — will take place on a rolling schedule beginning at 8 p.m.
Saturday's action is slated to begin with field events at 11 a.m. while the track events will start at 2 p.m.
The Roadrunners will compete against athletes from Kansas State, Our Lady of the Lake, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas State, UIW and UTRGV.
UTSA opened the outdoor season two weeks ago by winning seven events at the Longhorn Invitational in Austin. The women claimed victory in five events and the men added two triumphs.
Marilis Remmel started the day's competition for UTSA by leading a 1-2 finish in the women's javelin with a throw of 46.67 meters (153-1). Sigrid Kleive placed second with a 43.76 (143-7) mark.
Ingeborg Gruenwald leaped to gold in the women's long jump with a measurement of 6.23m (20-5.25).
The Roadrunners showed off their depth in the women's 400 meters, taking up six of the top eight finishing spots. Alanah Yukich crossed the line first and matched her personal-best time with a 54.50 clocking. Marie Duvigneau and Geraldy Barron placed second (56.07) and third (57.04), respectively, while Ibiso David-West (5th/58.74), Kaylyn Landry (7th/1:00.80) and Amanda Esparza (8th/1:00.91) also finished in the top eight.
Joy Baxter and Gabriel Green gave UTSA a sweep of the 400m hurdles.
Baxter, a sophomore from Houston, paced a 1-2-3 finish by the Roadrunners on the women's side as her winning time of 1:04.21 was ahead of runner-up Sarah Bell (1:06.18) and Maren Wilms (1:07.66), who was fourth overall and third among collegians.
In the men's 400m hurdles, Green clocked a 58.18 for second overall and first among collegiate runners.
Lauren Roy was the first collegian and fourth overall finisher in the 200m with a 23.66 clocking, which makes her the program's No. 4 all-time performer.
Back in the field, All-American Jemuel Miller registered the top collegiate mark in the men's triple jump. The sophomore from Barbados measured 16.03m (52-7.25) to finish second overall, one spot ahead of teammate Jacob Jenkins, who placed third with a 15.77m (51-9) effort to made him the program's No. 4 all-time performer.
In the men's long jump, All-American Christiaan Le Roux leaped 7.60m (24-11.25) to claim runner-up honors.
Meanwhile, Oreoluwa Adamson became UTSA's 15th female All-American when she earned second-team accolades with a 15th-place mark of 5.99m (19-8) in the long jump on March 10 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The Roadrunners captured 13 gold medals and totaled 29 top-three finishes at last year's UTSA Invitational.
On the men's side, Trevion McCalla (200m/20.99), Mike Roth (400m/47.38), Harrison Wade (5,000m/15:23.96), Grant Szalek (triple jump/15.63m/51-3.5) and the 4x400m relay team of Dennis Phillips, Diego Pettorossi, McCalla and Jose Garcia (39.34) all were victorious.
For the women, Thennelle Williams (200m/24.56), Marie Duvigneau (400m/55/94), Brooke Veltman (5,000m/19:30.11), Mackenzie Grimes (400m hurdles/1:00.45) and Danielle Spence (triple jump/12.47m/40-11) all struck gold, while Kleive won the javelin (44.29m) and high jump (1.67m/5-5.75) and the 4x1 relay squad of Ibiso David-West, Williams, Geraldy Barron and Vera Chinedu crossed first (46.08).
