Carreon wins Trinity Forest Invitational in record-setting fashion

DALLAS — Camryn Carreon captured the Trinity Forest Invitational individual title in record-setting fashion to lead the UTSA women's golf team to a ninth-place finish on Tuesday at Trinity Forest Golf Club (par 72/6,464 yards).

Carreon smashed the school records for low 18- and 54-hole scores en route to claiming her first collegiate victory and the 18th in the 18-year history of the program. The senior from San Antonio posted a 14-under-par 202 to edge Tulane's Carla Bernat — Golfstat's No. 14th-ranked player — by one shot and turn in UTSA's first individual win since Hannah Holzmann claimed the 2020 Texas State Invitational.

After opening with a 7-under 137 (68-69) on Monday, which matched the second-best 36-hole tally in program annals, Carreon fired a 7-under 65 on Tuesday to eclipse the previous UTSA standard of 66 held by Paola Valerio and Hunter Nugent. Her 14-under total beat the previous mark of 9-under established by Fabiola Arriaga at the 2014 Conference USA Championship and matched by Ana Gonzalez at the 2019 C-USA event, and her 202 was a three-shot improvement from Gonzalez's 8-under 205 posted at the 2017 Mercedes Benz-Collegiate Championship.

"I'm so happy to finally win one and bring one home," said Carreon, who became the first Roadrunner to advance past an NCAA Regional last May. "I'm so grateful for my teammates, my coaches and my entire UTSA family for all the love and support. Birds Up!"

The Incarnate Word High School product wrote down seven birdies in her bogey-free final round to push her total to a tournament-best 18 for the week. Carreon started her day on No. 10 and reeled off four straight pars before making birdie on three of the final five holes for a 33 on that side. She then recorded four more birdies en route to a 4-under 32 on the front. She also played the par fives at 8-under par, tops in the field of 84.

"Camryn's win was a long time coming," said two-time Conference USA Coach of the Year Summer Batiste. "She has the work ethic, determination and self-belief to break all records at UTSA. We're all so proud of her because we see the work she puts in."

Behind Carreon's record score, the Roadrunners finished ninth with a 10-over 874. After opening with a 300, UTSA registered a 4-under 284 on Monday afternoon before closing with a 290 on Tuesday.

The Roadrunners were two shots ahead of Texas State and three in front of Cal Poly in the 15-team field that included four top-50 squads.

Olivia Williams finished in a tie for 43rd place with a 5-over 221. The freshman from England posted a season best-tying 3-under 69 in the second round, which was sandwiched by a 75 and 77.

Morgan Ellison earned a share of 56th with a 226 (78-72-76), while Hunter Nugent was one shot behind her in a tie for 62nd at 227 (81-74-72). Lauren Rios rounded out the UTSA lineup in 80th (79-76-79—234).

No. 31 and host SMU won the team title with a 24-under 840, followed by No. 43 Houston (-19) and USF (-12).

The Roadrunners will return to the course on April 2-4 at the Chattanooga Classic.
