SAN ANTONIO — Following a 24-day break since their last event, the UTSA women's golf team will return to the course to play in the Chattanooga Classic on Sunday-Tuesday, April 2-4, at Council Fire Golf Club (par 72/6,234 yards).
The Roadrunners are the defending tournament champions and will compete against Augusta, Campbell, Central Arkansas, Chattanooga, Colorado State, East Tennessee State, Grand Canyon, Indiana, Jacksonville, Middle Tennessee, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Old Dominion, No. 28 SMU, USF, Xavier and Yale.
The field will play 18 holes each day with tee times at 8 a.m. CT on Sunday and Monday and an 8 a.m. CT shotgun start on Tuesday.
UTSA captured last year's team title behind top-five finishes from Ana Gonzalez and Hannah Holzmann. The Roadrunners edged North Florida by one stroke with a 5-over-par 869 in the team race. Gonzalez used a hole-in-one on No. 17 in her final round en route to a 4-under 212 (70-70-72) to tie for runner-up honors. Holzmann grabbed a share of fourth with a 2-under 214 (72-67-75), while Nicole Polivchak ended up in 13th (76-73-70—219).
The Roadrunners last competed on March 6-7 at the Trinity Forest Invitational, as Camryn Carreon claimed the individual title in record-setting fashion to lead UTSA to a ninth-place finish in Dallas.
Carreon smashed school records for low 18- and 54-hole scores in claiming her first collegiate victory and the 18th in the 18-year history of the program. The senior from San Antonio posted a 14-under-par 202 to edge Tulane's Carla Bernat by one shot and turn in UTSA's first individual win since Holzmann claimed the 2020 Texas State Invitational.
After opening with a 7-under 137 (68-69) on the first day, which matched the second-best 36-hole tally in program annals, Carreon fired a 7-under 65 in the final round to eclipse the previous UTSA standard of 66 held by Paola Valerio and Hunter Nugent. Her 14-under total beat the previous mark of 9-under established by Fabiola Arriaga at the 2014 Conference USA Championship and matched by Ana Gonzalez at the 2019 C-USA event, and her 202 was a three-shot improvement from Gonzalez's 8-under 205 posted at the 2017 Mercedes Benz-Collegiate Championship.
Carreon, who was named C-USA Golfer of the Week on March 8, will join Hunter Nugent, Morgan Ellison, Olivia Williams and Daniela Abonce in the lineup this week in Tennessee. She paces the team with a 73.0 stroke average and four top-10 finishes in 2022-23. In addition to her win last month, the Incarnate Word High School product tied for sixth with a 1-over 217 at the Dale McNamara Invitational, grabbed a share of eighth with a 3-under 213 at the Jim West Challenge and tied for 10th at the Paradise Invitational after carding a 2-under 214.
Ellison stands second on the squad with a 74.72 scoring average and the sophomore from Georgia has a pair of top-20 showings, including a tie for 10th at the Dale McNamara Invitational.
Abonce ranks third with a 74.83 mark, while Williams and Nugent are fourth (75.91) and fifth (76.5), respectively.
