SAN ANTONIO - UTSA men's basketball has signed three-star shooting guard Nazar Mahmoud during the spring signing period, head coach Steve Henson announced on Wednesday. Mahmoud will join the Roadrunners for the 2023-24 season.
"Nazar is a very versatile player who can really make plays," Henson said. "He is a great shooter with size. He has great feel for the game and a high basketball IQ. We have been recruiting Nazar for a couple of years and we are excited to add him to our program."
Mahmoud is a 6-foot-5, 185-pound shooting guard coming out of Leander, Texas and Plano's Spring Creek Academy. He is rated as a three-star player by Rivals and 247Sports, garnering a No. 37 shooting guard ranking from 247Sports. As a senior, Mahmoud helped SCA to a 26-4 record and was a 42-percent shooter (36 percent from long range) who averaged 20.6 ppg and chipped in nearly five (5) rebounds and two (2) assists per outing – earning first-team All-Southwest Athletic Interscholastic Conference (SWAIC) honors. Mahmoud previously played prep basketball for two years at Rouse High School, where he averaged 17.9 points and 4.8 rebounds as a junior and 15.7 points/5.0 rebounds as a sophomore. For his efforts as a junior, he was named the District 25-5A Offensive MVP, earned Academic All-District honors and was named on the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) All-State team. As a sophomore, he garnered a spot on the 25-5A All-District first team. In addition, Mahmoud played AAU ball with Southern Assault and previously competed in the Peach Jam while playing for JL3 Elite.
