Carreon in top 10 after opening round of Chattanooga Classic

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Camryn Carreon is in the top 10 individuals and the UTSA women's golf team is in tied for 14th after the first round of the Chattanooga Classic, which teed off Sunday at Council Fire Golf Club (par 72/6,209 yards).
 
Carreon fired a 1-over-par 73 and has a share of eighth place through 18 of 54 holes. The senior from San Antonio recorded a pair of birdies and is one of 10 players sitting five shots off the pace set by Notre Dame's Lauren Beaudreau, who fired a 4-under 68.
 
Teeing off from No. 10. Carreon bounced back from two bogeys through the first five holes with a birdie on the 146-yard, par-3 17th. She then wrote down par on five of her next six holes before adding a second birdie, this time on the 538-yard, par-5 sixth. The Incarnate Word High School product finished with a trio of pars to finish her opening round at 1-over.
 
Behind Carreon's 73, the Roadrunners registered a 312 and are tied with Jacksonville and Central Arkansas for 14th, only six strokes out of the top 10.
 
Daniela Abonce carded a 76 on the strength of a pair of birdies and is tied for 36th, while Hunter Nugent is in 74th (81). Morgan Ellison and Olivia Williams are part of a tie for 78th (82).
 
No. 26 SMU leads the team standings at even-par 288, followed by Notre Dame (+5), Augusta (+8), Minnesota (+8) and Xavier (+10) in the top five.
 
The second round is slated for Monday and UTSA will be tee off No. 1 beginning at 8 a.m. CT.
