HOUSTON — Led by a pair of victories from Mike Roth, the UTSA track & field teams won five events at the J Fred Duckett Twilight on Saturday at Wendel D. Ley Track.
Roth was joined in the winner's circle by Dylan James on the men's side, while Ingeborg Gruenwald and Sigrid Kleive also struck gold in Space City, as the Roadrunners tallied 15 total podium finishes.
Roth posted a pair of career-best times to headline a strong Saturday showing by the Roadrunners. The sophomore from St. Thomas, Ontario, won the 400 meters with a time of 45.95 seconds, crossing nearly a full second ahead of Houston's Trey Johnson (46.80) to beat his previous PR of 46.42 logged at the Conference USA Indoor Championships in February when he was the meet's high point scorer. It also bettered his top outdoor time of 46.73 posted last week in a triumph at the Cactus Cup.
Roth returned to the track to cross first among collegiate sprinters and second overall in the 200m. He stopped the clock in 20.98 to finish behind unattached Adeseye Ogunlewe (20.83) and just ahead of teammates Dennis Phillips and Brice Chabot, who placed second (21.01) and fourth (21.10), respectively, among collegians. Roth's time eclipsed his previous personal best of 21.09 recorded at the 2023 C-USA Indoor and his top outdoor clocking of 21.18 registered last week at the Cactus Cup.
Earlier in the day, James collected his first win as a Roadrunner in the triple jump. The junior transfer from Arizona State skipped to a mark of 15.64 meters (51-3.75) to lead a 1-2 UTSA finish. James opened the competition with a 15.17m (49-9.25) measurement to move into first place for good. The Australian improved to 15.45m (50-8.25) on his second trip down the runway before posting his top jump of the afternoon in round four. He also finished seventh among collegians in the long jump with a leap of 7.26m (23-10).
Fellow junior transfer Jacob Jenkins secured silver in the triple jump with a mark of 15.13m (49-7.75), which he posted on his final attempt of the day after moving into second place in round two.
Gruenwald picked up her third long jump victory of the outdoor season. The junior All-American from Austria leaped 6.23m (20-5.25) on her first attempt of the day and held on for the win ahead of Houston's Alexis Tilford-Rutherford, who measured 6.07m (19-11).
Meanwhile, fellow All-American Oreoluwa Adamson touched the sand at a distance of 6.02m (19-9) to finish third among collegiate competitors and fourth overall in the long jump.
Kleive was the top collegian in the high jump and second overall with a clearance of 1.72m (5-7.75). A native of Aalesund, Norway, she sailed over the bar on her first attempt at four consecutive heights — the last one just shy of her career best of 1.73m (5-8) — in the competition won by unattached Josie Taylor's 1.78m (5-10) clearance.
Kleive also collected a silver medal earlier in the day with a career showing in the javelin. She tossed the implement 46.58m (152-10) on her second attempt to move from third place into second, where she remained behind event champion McKyla Van Der Westhuizen (53.10m/174-2). Kleive, the program's No. 2 all-time performer, bettered her previous PB of 45.72m (150-0) by more than two feet.
The UTSA throwers showed their depth elsewhere on Saturday.
In the men's shot put, a trio of Roadrunners placed in the top six. Michael Campbell earned runner-up honors with a mark of 17.20m (56-5.25), while Paul Bouey and Angel Robles finished fifth (16.74m/54-11.25) and sixth (16.62m/54-6.5), respectively.
In the women's hammer throw, Isabella Simonelli finished fourth with a toss of 56.29m (184-8) and Acacia Astwood was sixth with a 55.21m (181-1) measurement.
Amaya King added a silver-medal showing in the women's shot put later in the evening, as the junior transfer from Purdue measured 14.99m (49-2.25) on her third attempt.
Back on the track, Alanah Yukich registered a pair of top-four finishes. The Australian crossed the finish line second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 57.61 before returning to the oval to clock a 24.10 for fifth overall and fourth among collegians in the 200m.
The men placed three in the top four collegians in the 100m, as Trevion McCalla clocked a 10.48 for second, while Chabot was third in 10.50 followed closely by Phillips in fourth in 10.55.
Thennelle Williams was third among collegiate sprinters and sixth overall in the women's 100m with an 11.97 clocking.
Madi Henry clocked a season-best 11:26.29 to finish eighth in the women's 3,000m steeplechase, while Landon Blankenship was eighth among collegians in the men's steeple in 9:36.84.
The Roadrunners will return to action next Saturday, April 29, when they travel to Austin for the Texas Invitational.
