SAN ANTONIO – The No. 22 UTSA baseball team dropped the first two games of its series with No. 18 DBU, 11-7 and 11-9, in a doubleheader on Friday at Roadrunner Field.
QUICK HITS
- In the two games, Josh Killeen combined for four hits and six RBI, including a game-tying grand slam in the bottom of the eighth in the nightcap. Killeen also hit a two-run home run in the first game.
- Dalton Porter had four hits on the day, along with an RBI and two walks.
- Leyton Barry had two hits and two RBI in the first game, also notching a leadoff home run in the second game to extend his reached-base streak to 17 games.
- Caleb Hill combined for three hits in the game to also extend his reached base streak to 17 games.
- The Roadrunners fall to a 36-14 overall record (19-6 in C-USA), while Dallas Baptist improves to a 39-12 overall record (22-4 in conference play).
GAME ONE – DBU 11, UTSA 7
The Roadrunners opened up scoring first in the bottom of the second as a double by Porter and single by Barry gave UTSA a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the next frame, the Patriots took a 3-2 lead with a three-run home run. UTSA tied it up at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth as a single to right center by Valdez drove home Garrett Poston.
A big five-run inning by Dallas Baptist in the fifth inning would prove to be the difference maker in this game.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Roadrunners cut DBU's lead to 8-5 with a double by Barry and sacrifice fly by Valdez.
After a scoreless seventh frame, the Patriots brought in another three runs to extend their lead to 11-5.
After a two-run home run by Killeen in the bottom of the ninth, the Roadrunners attempted a comeback but fell short as UTSA fell to DBU by 11-7.
GAME TWO – DBU 11, UTSA 9
The Roadrunners once again got started quick as Barry led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run.
After a scoreless second inning, the Patriots had a five-run third frame to take a 5-1 lead. In the bottom of the frame, the Roadrunners got two of those back with a double by Hill, before Hill came in to score on a wild pitch to cut DBU's lead to 5-3.
The Patriots scattered three more runs across the sixth and seventh innings. UTSA once again answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh as Valdez scored on a wild pitch Killeen scored on a Sammy Diaz single.
DBU extended its lead to 9-5 in the top of the eighth, but a grand slam by Killeen in the bottom of the frame tied the game up at 9-9 and shifted the momentum.
The Patriots regained the 11-9 lead in the top of the ninth. With one out and a 1-2 count to Porter in the bottom of the frame, lightning in the area caused a 49-minute delay. Coming back from the delay, DBU's closer Kyle Amendt used 11 pitches to record the final two outs as UTSA dropped game two to DBU, 11-9.
