AUSTIN, Texas — Bashiru Abdullahi earned All-America accolades in the men's 110-meter hurdles for the second consecutive year to highlight opening-day action for UTSA at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Wednesday at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
Abdullahi finished 16th in the national semifinal round of the 110m hurdles to collect his second straight second-team All-America certificate. Running in lane two in the second of three semifinal heats, the senior from Benin City, Nigeria, clocked a time of 13.68 seconds to finish fifth in that race and in the top 16 of the 24-man field, securing second-team accolades.
Last year, Abdullahi picked up his first All-America award as a Roadrunner with a 15th-place finish in Eugene, Oregon. This year, he punched his ticket to Austin after clocking a time of 13.61 seconds to finish eighth in the quarterfinal round at the NCAA West Preliminary two weeks ago in Sacramento, California.
Abdullahi transferred to UTSA from Cal State Northridge after earning honorable mention All-America accolades as a freshman in 2019. He finished his UTSA career with six Conference USA medals, including three golds, as well as school records in the 110m hurdles (13.52) and indoor 60m hurdles (7.77).
In other action, Jack Turner is in ninth place and Joel McFarlane stands 14th after the opening day of the men's decathlon.
Turner got his day started by clocking a 10.76 in the 100 meters, good for 915 points and ninth place in the 24-man field. The England native then leaped 7.22 meters (23-8.25) on his second of three attempts in the long jump to add 866 points and remain in ninth place through two disciplines. After measuring 12.69m (41-7.75) for 648 points in the shot, he cleared 1.92m (6-3.5) in the high jump for 731 more points and a hold on 12th place. The three-time C-USA decathlon champion closed the opening day with a 47.78 clocking in the 400 to round out his day-one total of 4,080 points.
Meanwhile, McFarlane raced to a 10.86 clocking in the 100m for 892 points, good for 13th place in the first event. The Scotland native then jumped into 11th place after adding 833 points as a result of a mark of 23-2.75 in the long jump. He dropped to 14th following a 13.40m (43-11.75) measurement in the shot put and then tallied 627 points with a 1.80m (5-10.75) clearance in the high jump. He concluded day one by circling the oval in 48.23 seconds to push his total to 3,942 points through five events.
Day two of the decathlon will get underway with the 110m hurdles at noon Thursday.
Oreoluwa Adamson also will be in action on Thursday, as the junior will look to collect her second All-America certificate of the calendar year when she competes in the women's long jump at 9 p.m. The England native garnered second-team honors with a 15th-place showing at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March. She has advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the first time after recording a seventh-place leap of 6.29 meters (20-7.75) at the West Preliminary.
