AUSTIN, Texas — Jack Turner earned first-team All-America honors, while Oreoluwa Adamson and Joel McFarlane received honorable mention All-America status at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Turner finished seventh in the decathlon with 7,851 points to become the first Roadrunner to collect first-team All-America accolades since Jemuel Miller at the 2022 NCAA Indoor. McFarlane placed 18th in the decathlon and Adamson was 23rd in the women's long jump on Thursday, while Bashiru Abdullahi picked up second-team All-America honors in the men's 110-meter hurdles on Wednesday.
Turner entered the final five events of the decathlon in ninth place with 4,080 points, using a strong second day to climb into the top eight. A native of Exeter, England, he immediately moved into eighth after peeling off a time of 14.96 in the 110-meter hurdles, collecting 854 points to push his total to 4,934 through six events.
Meanwhile, McFarlane entered the day in 14th place with 3,942 points. He clocked a 15.82 in the 110m hurdles to give him 4,695 points with four disciplines remaining before the decathlon field was forced to endure a near-two-hour delay due to lightning in the area.
When action resumed, Turner added 765 points after unleashing a personal-best discus throw of 44.90 meters (147-4) to jump into seventh place. The six-time Conference USA champion then cleared 4.81m (15-9.25) in the pole vault, which was worth 852 points and a spot in the top six, only 10 points behind Iowa's Austin West for fifth place.
With two events remaining, Turner uncorked a throw of 49.29m (161-8) in the javelin to tack on 578 points, putting him back in seventh at 7,129 with only the 1,500-meter run to go. In the final race, he made up ground on the final two laps, jumping into third place in the race after crossing the finish line in a personal best 4:33.47. That performance added 722 points to round out his 7,851 tally, the second-best total in program history behind his school record-setting showing of 8,011 at the C-USA Outdoor last month.
Following the weather delay, McFarlane also posted a personal best in the discus with a throw of 40.46m (132-9), good for 674 points. The Monikie, Scotland, native then soared over 4.11m (13-5.75) in the pole vault for 648 points and tossed the javelin 51.12m (167-8) for 605 more to put him in 19th with 6,662 points. He closed out the competition by clocking a 4:38.61 to cross sixth in the 1,500m and bring his sum to 7,311 points, good for 18th. He advanced to Austin after putting up a personal best 7,661 points to finish third at the league meet and stamp his name as the program's No. 2 all-time performer.
That duo joins Adrian Riley and Justin Youngblood as Roadrunners who have achieved All-America status in the decathlon. Riley was a second-team honoree in 2018 after finishing 12th (7,520), while Youngblood was a two-time first-team All-American following seventh-place finishes in 2002 (7,642) and 2004 (7,588).
Turner's seventh-place finish equated to two points for the Roadrunners, who finished in a tie with Butler, Cal Poly, Iowa State, Ole Miss, Oregon and Villanova for 61st place in the men's team standings.
Meanwhile, Adamson received honorable mention All-America accolades with a 23rd-place finish in the long jump late Thursday night. The London, England, native bounced back from a foul on her first attempt with a 5.87m (19-3.25) leap on her second trip down the runway. She then touched the sand at 5.71m (18-8.75) on her final try, finishing ahead of Cal's Ijeoma Uche (5.71m/18-8.75).
It marked Adamson's second trip to the national meet this calendar years, as she collected second-team All-America honors with a 15th-place leap of 5.99m (19-8) at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March. She advanced to the NCAA Outdoor for the first time after recording a mark of 6.29 meters (20-7.75) to place seventh at the NCAA West Preliminary. She claimed three C-USA gold medals in 2023, including setting the school standard in the indoor long jump with a 6.46m (21-2.5) measurement.
On Wednesday, Abdullahi finished 16th in the semifinal round of the 110m hurdles to collect his second straight second-team All-America certificate. Running in lane two in the second of three semifinal heats, the senior from Benin City, Nigeria, clocked a time of 13.68 seconds to secure his third career All-America honor in his final race as a Roadrunner.
UTSA now boasts 38 All-Americans who have combined to collect 73 certificates in the sports of cross country and indoor and outdoor track & field. A total of 23 men have collected 44 certificates, while 15 women have picked up 29 honors. A total of 51 of the All-America certificates have been earned outdoors, 33 on the men's and 18 by the women's program.
