SAN ANTONIO — UTSA senior David Harrison is in a tie for fourth place and the UTSA men’s golf team is in 10th through two rounds of the Valero Texas Collegiate, which continued on Sunday at TPC San Antonio Oaks Course (par 72/7,034 yards).
Harrison fired a 3-under-par 69 to move into contention for the individual title and coveted exemption into the 2024 Valero Texas Open, the PGA TOUR’s annual stop on this same course each April. The Trophy Club, Texas, native used three birdies and an eagle to leap from a share of 14th into a three-way tie for fourth at 3-under 141 in the 72-man field. He sits three shots off the 6-under pace set by Baylor’s Johnny Keefer and TCU’s Gustav Frimodt.
After opening the 54-hole event with an even-par 72 on Saturday, Harrison turned in his best score as a Roadrunner since a 68 in the final round of the Trinity Forest Invitational last fall. Teeing off from No. 10, he registered back-to-back birdies in his first two holes before settling for a bogey on the 12th. Following a par, he posted an eagle on the 553-yard, par-5 14th hole to get to 3-under for the round. He then reeled off five consecutive pars that led into a birdie on the 203-yard, par-3 third to move to 4-under, but a bogey followed by six pars to close out the round gave him a 69.
Behind Harrison, the Roadrunners are in 10th place in the team standings. UTSA sits at 10-over 586 after turning in a 296 today, only one shot behind Georgia and 15 strokes in front of Louisville.
Hunter Bott posted the second-best round of the day for the Roadrunners with a 1-over 73 that featured five birdies. The senior from Montgomery, Texas, has a share of 26th at 3-over 147.
Jack Wehman and Brock Blais both carded a 77 on Sunday for the other two counting scores. Wehman is in a tie for 45th at 5-over 149 after opening with a 72, while Blais is in 58th (152).
Walker Franklin rounds out the lineup in a tie for 60th (72-81—153).
TCU leads the team race at 4-under, followed by Baylor (-3), and Vanderbilt (-1) in the 12-team field that features some of the nation’s top collegiate programs.
The final round of the Valero Texas Collegiate is set for Monday and the Roadrunners will tee off from No. 10 beginning at 8:10 a.m. Admission is free.
