SAN ANTONIO — Empress Davenport, UTSA women’s basketball assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, has been selected for induction into the Duncanville (Texas) ISD Athletics Hall of Honor.
Davenport, a 2012 graduate of Duncanville High School, will be inducted on Feb. 2 at the DHS East Cafeteria. The induction ceremony begins at 5 p.m. CT and parking is available in the Sandra Meadows Arena Parking Lot. Davenport will be inducted along with Jose Burciaga, Jr. (soccer), Brandon Fahey (baseball), Tonya Michelle Hyman-Quintana (soccer) and Martha McClelland (basketball).
As a Duncanville Pantherette, Davenport was named the Most Valuable Player on the school’s 2012 University Interscholastic League (UIL) 5A State Championship team that finished with a 38-1 record. She totaled 1,300 points during her time at Duncanville, including 17 in the 2012 state championship game. As a senior, Davenport averaged 14.2 points per game, 4.1 rebounds per game and 3.0 assists per game. In her final three seasons at Duncanville, the team charted a record of 104-13 (.889). Davenport also was a sprinter and participated in the high jump for Duncanville in 2009 and 2010. She graduated with a grade-point average among the top-10 percent in her class and was a recipient of a Texas Scholar Award in 2012.
Davenport went on to be a standout player at the University of Texas, seeing action in 131 games with 97 starts. She averaged 7.2 points per game, 3.6 rebounds per game and 2.2 assists per game during her collegiate career. Davenport played in three NCAA Tournaments, including the Sweet 16 in 2014 and 2015 and the Elite Eight in 2015. She helped her team to the championship game of the Big 12 Conference Tournament in both 2014 and 2015. Davenport was named the USBWA’s Ann Meyers Drysdale National Player of the Week on Dec. 15, 2015 after scoring a career-high 23 points in her team’s win against No. 12 Stanford. She was a member of the Academic All-Big 12 Team, the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and was an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection in 2016. Davenport served as a team representative on UT’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Since her graduation from Texas and after a season playing overseas in Sweden, Davenport has been a collegiate coach. She spent three seasons (2018-21) as an assistant coach at Lamer University, helping the team to a Southland Conference Championship in 2018-19. Since 2021, she has served on the staff of her college head coach Karen Aston at UTSA.
Davenport graduated from The University of Texas in May 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in applied learning and development with a minor in business. She earned her master’s degree in sport management from Louisiana State University in the spring of 2022.
