BOCA RATON, Fla. — Camryn Carreon is tied for sixth place and the UTSA women’s golf team is in 10th after the opening day of the Paradise Invitational, which teed off Monday at Osprey Point Golf Club (par 72/6,204 yards).
Carreon sits in a six-way tie for sixth after posting a 2-under-par 142, three shots off the pace in the 75-person field. The senior from San Antonio bounced back from a 3-over 75 in the first round with a 5-under 67 in the afternoon to move into contention with 18 holes left to play on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Roadrunners posted rounds of 296 and even-par 288 on Monday, putting them at 8-over 584, one shot behind Notre Dame and two ahead of FIU in the 13-team field led by South Florida (-9). UTSA is only two strokes out of a tie for seventh between BYU and Indiana.
Carreon logged just one birdie in the morning round, a three on the 330-yard sixth hole. However, the 2023 NCAA San Antonio Regional champion recorded five birdies as part of a bogey-free second round en route to her 10th sub-70 scorecard in 14 rounds this season. Starting on No. 5, the all-conference performer wrote down six consecutive pars before circling her number on the 373-yard, par-4 11th. She then posted birdies on Nos. 15 and 17 before adding two more on the first and third holes to put her at 5-under for the round.
Morgan Ellison led UTSA in the opening round with a 1-over 73 that featured five birdies. The junior from Georgia turned in an even-par 72 in the afternoon on the strength of two more birdies to settle into a tie for 26th at 1-over 145.
Daniela Abonce has a share of 43rd at 5-over 149. The sophomore from Mexico registered a 74 in the morning followed by a 75 in the afternoon.
Maria Bastarrica (78-74—152) and Federica Tavelli Westerlund (74-78—152) round out the UTSA lineup as part of a tie for 53rd.
The final round is scheduled for a 7 a.m. CT start Tuesday.
