DENVER – The UTSA men’s tennis team (3-3) couldn’t rally enough points on the singles courts to rise above Denver on Sunday at the Denver Tennis Park, splitting matches on the weekend in the Mile High City. The Pioneers (4-0) held off UTSA to a 5-2 victory, doling out the inverse of the last year’s result in San Antonio.
Alan Magadan and Tomás Pinho opened doubles with a clean victory on the top court over Marvin Schaber/Anish Sriniketh, 6-0. After the Pioneers drew things even with a court three win, Miguel Alonso and Tiago Torres pushed court two to a 7-5 match, but ultimately were downed.
Securing a pair of singles court victories for the Roadrunners, Alonso kicked off the scoring on court five with a besting of Rikuto Yamaguchi, 6-1, 6-1, and Danijal Muminovic later topped Peter Sallay on court four, 7-5, 6-3. On two, Pinho logged the first set win, but the match drew out before Daniel Sancho Arbizu pulled away for Denver’s point in an extensive tiebreaker, 1-6, 6-4, 12-10.
Quoting Coach Sergey Avdeyev
"It was very good college match today. Credit to Denver, they made a good home match atmosphere for themselves. They just won more points that really mattered and made the scorecard turn their way. We fought hard but at the end, mentally they were stronger today."
