BOCA RATON, Fla. — The UTSA softball team was unable to overcome first-place Florida Atlantic, falling 6-1 in an American Athletic Conference series opener at the FAU Softball Stadium on Friday.
The Roadrunners (12-35. 3-16 The American) were defeated by the Owls (34-12, 14-5 The American) as senior Jamie Gilbert (5-13) was pegged with the loss and Gabby Sacco (10-3) earned the win. Junior Camryn Robillard provided the squad's lone RBI, while senior Taylor Jensen, junior Sophie Campbell, and classmate Lindsey Davis all recorded hits.
FAU snagged an early lead, pushing across two on a single in the bottom of the first. UTSA replied in the top of the second, as Campbell walked and made her way to third on a Davis double before denting the plate on a Robillard sacrifice fly, resulting in a 2-1 score line.
The Owls threatened again in the third, putting a pair in scoring position before a senior Kenzie Schultz strikeout got the 'Runners out of the jam and kept the squad within striking distance. However, the Owl offensive later succeeded, scoring three in the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 6-1 advantage.
UTSA was unable to spark a comeback, and the 'Runners and Owls will meet two more times, with a Saturday showdown at 1 p.m. CT ahead of the finale Sunday at 11 a.m.
