Carreon, Abonce earn berths to NCAA Bryan Regional

INDIANAPOLIS — UTSA senior Camryn Carreon and sophomore Daniela Abonce have earned berths to the NCAA Bryan Regional, which will be hosted by Texas A&M on May 6-8 at Traditions Club.

Carreon and Abonce, who both were named to the All-American Athletic Conference Team earlier today, are two of six individuals chosen to play in the Bryan Regional along with 12 teams. Carreon, a San Antonio native, will be the No. 2-seeded individual her fourth consecutive NCAA postseason appearance and Abonce, who hails from Veracruz, Mexico, is the 5-seed for her first NCAA Regional.

This marks the first time two Roadrunners have received an invitation to compete as individuals in an NCAA Regional in the same year.

Carreon earned a spot in the San Antonio Regional last year and eventually won the individual title by six shots to advance to the NCAA Championships for the second straight season. In 2022, Carreon made a second consecutive regional as a member of the UTSA lineup at the Franklin Regional in Tennessee, where she tied for fourth overall and moved on to the NCAA Championships as the top individual not on an advancing team in that tournament. She made her first postseason appearance with the Roadrunners in the 2021 Louisville Regional, tying for 57th.

Fabiola Arriaga was the first Roadrunner to advance to the NCAA postseason as an individual, doing so in 2014 when she finished in a tie for 49th at the West Regional in Cle Elum, Washington.

The Roadrunners now own a total of 10 NCAA postseason team or individual berths dating back to their first trip to the 2011 NCAA West Regional in Auburn, Washington. This marks UTSA’s sixth consecutive NCAA appearance after qualifying as a team for four straight tournaments (the 2020 NCAA postseason was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
