Long jumpers highlight UTSA action on Friday at Texas Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas Ida Breigan finished second among collegiate competitors to lead a total of five top-10 finishes by UTSA long jumpers on Friday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

Breigan, a freshman from Norway, leaped to a distance of 6.65 meters (21-10) to finish third overall and second among collegians, trailing only Texas’ Ackelia Smith (7.10m/23-3.5) and professional Tyra Gittens (6.72m/22-0.75) in the field of more than 30 jumpers. After opening with a mark of 6.48m (21-3.25) followed by a foul, the All-American and school record holder registered her top mark of the afternoon on her third trip down the runway.

Fellow freshman Edlin Laur placed sixth among collegians and seventh overall in the long jump, breaking the sand at a distance of 5.90m (19-4.25), while Dahlia Barnes was ninth out of the NCAA competitors with a 5.73m (18-9.75) mark.

On the men’s side, the junior duo of Gabriel Binion and Dylan James finished fourth and fifth, respectively, among collegians with a pair of season bests.

Binion, who hails from Australia, saved his best jump for his sixth and final leap, measuring 7.76m (25-5.5) to place seventh overall and notch an outdoor personal best. His previous PB was a 7.62m (25-0) mark earlier this month at the Beach Invitational, while it also came up just one centimeter shy of his lifetime best of 7.77m (25-6) from the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in February during the indoor campaign.

James posted his best long jump of the season with a 7.64m (25-0.75) effort. That bettered the Australian’s previous season best of 7.54m (24-9) logged at the UTSA Invitational in March.

On the track, Kiah Dubarry-Gay sped to a time of wind-aided 23.59 to finish 10th overall and sixth among collegiate sprinters in the women’s 200m. Itzel Rojo notched a sixth-place showing in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase after clocking a 13:37.57

In other action, Paul Bouey finished 10th in the men’s discus throw with a mark of 46.18m (151-6).

The second day of the Texas Invitational will get underway with field events starting at 9 a.m. and running events at 2 p.m.
