TULSA, Okla. — On Sunday, the UTSA softball team picked up a 10-3 victory over Tulsa in an American Athletic Conference series finale at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
The Roadrunners (14-39, 4-20 The American) bested the Golden Hurricane (29-18, 14-9 The American), with senior Kenzi Schultz (1-9) picking up the win, while Maura Moore (11-7) was tagged with the loss and freshman Zelinda Camacho (1) earned her first career save. Additionally, the ‘Runners used five total pitchers in the outing with senior Jamie Gilbert, sophomore Reagan Smith, and freshman Iliana Saucedo also appearing in the circle.
UTSA dominated at the dish, with junior Jaylen Prichard going 3-for-3 and scoring thrice, while four different ‘Runners recorded RBIs. Junior Sophie Campbell and sophomore Lindsey Davis each plated three, while senior Taylor Jensen and classmate Erykah Guerrero drove in two, including a home run.
The ‘Runners struck first as Prichard dropped a leadoff double into right field before scoring on a sharply hit single by Campbell in the top of the first. Looking to respond, a walk and a double put a pair in scoring position with one out in the home half. Gilbert, however, got out of the jam unscathed, keeping the 1-0 UTSA lead intact.
UTSA doubled its lead in the third, as back-to-back singles by Prichard and Jensen led off the stanza. Shortly after, Davis laced a single through the middle of the infield, handing the ‘Runners a 2-0 advantage. Tulsa then put up a crooked number in the bottom of the inning, knotting the contest 2-2.
In the fourth, redshirt freshman Kylie Forney walked ahead of a Golden Hurricane miscue that allowed junior Camryn Robillard to reach base safely. Prichard was issued a free pass, juicing the bases ahead of back-to-back singles for Jensen and Campbell, prompting a 4-2 Roadrunner edge. From there, Davis plated a pair via a base hit into right, increasing the UTSA advantage to four.
Tulsa launched a solo home run to open the bottom of the frame and threatened to add more to their total before a diving catch by redshirt freshman Madi Hays ended the inning with a 6-3 score line.
Guerrero smoked a solo shot over the wall in center field in the sixth, and the Roadrunners tacked on three more in the seventh, with Jensen, Campbell, and Guerrero all plating runs. Camacho then polished things off, capping off 3.2 innings in relief with a strikeout.
UTSA will now host South Florida in the final series of the regular season, with three games spanning Friday through Sunday at Roadrunner Field.
