Bare fourth, UTSA 10th after opening round of Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational

SAUCIER, Miss. — Brayden Bare is tied for fourth place and the UTSA men’s golf team is tied for 10th after the first round of the Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational, which got underway Saturday at Beau Rivage’s Private Course, Fallen Oak (par 72/7,487 yards).

Bare fired a 1-under-par 71 to earn a share of fourth place through the first 18 holes of the 54-hole event. The redshirt sophomore from Waco is only two shots off the pace set by South Carolina’s Frankie Harris, who posted the low round of the day with a 69.

Starting his day on No. 10, Bare bounced back from a bogey on the 11th with a birdie on the 382-yard, par-4 12th hole. He also circled his number on the 604-yard, par-5 15th to help counter a second bogey and turn in a 36 on the back nine. He added three more birdies on the front side with twos on both par threes and a three on the 488-yard, par-4 fifth.

Meanwhile, the Roadrunners registered a 300 and are in a three-way tie for 10th with Southern Miss and No. 32 UNLV. That trio is only two strokes behind a three-way tie for seventh between No. 15 Illinois, Iowa and No. 36 Kansas.

Kaelen Dulany turned in a 74 and has a share of 29th place. The sophomore from Keller, Texas, posted four birdies, including a two on the 224-yard third hole.

Playing in the lineup for the first time this fall, Logan Zurn is tied for 55th after carding a 77 that was highlighted by four birdies, including back-to-back on Nos. 1-2.

Logan Vargas and Walker Franklin round out the UTSA lineup in 63rd (78) and 68th (79), respectively, while David Martinez is also tied for 68th competing as an individual.

No. 29 Georgia has the day-one team lead at 1-under par, followed by fifth-ranked LSU, No. 22 Mississippi State and No. 2 Ole Miss in the field that includes nine top-50 squads.

The second round is slated for Sunday and the Roadrunners will tee off from No. 10 beginning at 9:50 a.m.
