Roadrunners travel to AAC Individual Championships

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA men’s tennis team will pit a pair of singles players and a doubles pair up against the top opposition in the American Athletic Conference this week as three players travel to the AAC Individual Championships, running Thursday, Oct. 24 through Sunday Oct. 27 at Rice’s George R. Brown Tennis Center in Houston.

Seniors Tiago Torres (Lisbon, Portugal) and Danijal Muminovic (Tuzla, Bosnia) will both compete in singles action, beginning Oct. 24 at 10 a.m. at the Brown Tennis Center. The two-seed, Torres who opened the season with a No. 119 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national ranking, will have a first-round BYE and is set to face the winner between Florida Atlantic’s Jiri Jenicek and Rice’s Arthus de la Bassetiere at 3:30 p.m. in the Round of 16. A win would move on to the quarterfinals on Oct. 25 at 1:30 p.m.

On the other side of the bracket, Muminovic will face Rice’s Emir Sendogan at 10 a.m. on the 24th in the Round of 32. Winning the opener would send Muminovic ahead to face top-seeded Pablo Alemany from Memphis – the nation’s 27th-ranked preseason singles player at 2 p.m. on Thursday. The semifinal is set for Oct. 26 with the final on Oct. 27.

In doubles action, Torres will resume his partnership with classmate Miguel Alonso (Veracruz, Mexico) in the Round of 16 doubles bracket. Over the weekend at the ITA Texas Regional Championships in Waco, the UTSA tandem reached the tournament’s semifinal, defeating nationally third-ranked Togan Tokac and Giulio Perego from Texas A&M in the quarterfinal. At AACs, Torres and Alonso will open up with South Florida’s Hugo Car and Fransisco Llanes at 9 a.m. Friday. The winner will move on to face Rice’s de la Bassetiere and Kabeer Kapasi at 10 a.m. on Friday. The doubles semifinal and final are scheduled for Oct. 26 and 27, respectively.
