SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women's basketball team is headed for Tampa, Florida, where an American Athletic Conference matchup against South Florida awaits at 6 p.m. CT at the Yuengling Center.
The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with Jim Louk (play-by-play) and Leah Secondo (analyst) on the call. Neal Raphael will deliver all the action on the radio in the greater San Antonio area on The Bull 93.3 FM and worldwide on the iHeartRadio app.
The Roadrunners (17-2, 8-0 The American) are coming off a 64-53 victory over Tulsa that secured the squad's first 10-game winning streak since the 2007-08 season. UTSA also won their 11th consecutive contest in the Convocation Center, tying a stretch from Jan. 9, 2002-Nov. 28, 2003, for the program record.
Graduate student Nina De Leon Negron was awarded AAC Player of the Week after pouring in 19 points with 10 rebounds, eight assists, a block and a steal. Also performing well, sophomore Idara Udo collected 16 points with eight boards, two blocks, and two steals, while junior Cheyenne Rowe scored nine with four rebounds.
UTSA enters the week ranked eighth in the NCAA with a plus-11.0 rebound margin and is 19th with 15.3 offensive rebounds per game. A 55.7 scoring defense is 25th, 4.4 blocks per game are 34th, and a 37.0% field goal defense is 34th as well.
Redshirt senior Jordyn Jenkins continues to pace The American in points and points per game with 360 for an average of 18.9 PPG. She also leads in free throws (82), free throw percentage (84.5), and field goals (131) while checking in at third in blocks with 25 and eighth in rebounds per game at 7.3. Additionally, De Leon Negron ranks atop the AAC and 29th in the NCAA with 5.2 assists per game.
The Bulls (13-8, 6-2 The American) bested East Carolina, 63-60, last time out and enter the game tied for third in the league standings. As a team, they pace the AAC in three-point percentage with a 36.2% mark, sitting 25th nationally, and 14.9 turnovers per game are the fewest in the conference.
Sammie Puisis has played a major role in their success from beyond the arc, with 64 made threes and an average of 3.05 per game, both sitting inside the top 10 on the NCAA leaderboard. She maintains a 43.2% clip from deep, and 14.7 PPG are sixth in The American.
Vittoria Blasigh joins Puisis in averaging double-digit scoring figures at 10.5, and Carla Brito is the team's leading rebounder, averaging 7.5 per game. Mama Dembele has starred for the squad defensively, swiping 52 steals, which ranks 31st across the country, and she also leads the team with 101 assists.
