Roadrunners win 13 straight, breaking program record

SAN ANTONIO— UTSA picked up its 13th straight win to break the program record in a 14-5 victory over Texas Southern on Saturday, Mar. 8 at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio, Texas.

THE BASICS:

UTSA jumped out to an early lead as Drew Detlefsen got the Roadrunners’ first hit of the day on a double down the right field line. Ty Hodge drove in Detlefsen on a double down the left field line for the first run of the ball game. James Taussig kept the scoring going as he singled to centerfield allowing T. Hodge to score.

After a walk, a bunt single and another walk, the Roadrunners had bases loaded in the second. Detlefsen was the man at the plate with bases loaded, he was walked as well, scoring the Roadrunners’ third run of the game for his first RBI of the game.

In the third, UTSA found the bases loaded once again, all three runners reaching on a walk. For the fourth run of the game, freshman Jordan Ballin was walked, scoring Cade Sadler. With bases still loaded Mason Lytle hit a single to center field to score both Nathan Hodge and Caden Miller to put the Roadrunners up 6-0.

After tossing three scoreless innings, Conor Myles gave up two runs, both unearned. Myles was taken out of the ball game tossing 3.2 innings pitched with seven strikeouts, only allowing two hits.

UTSA kept the foot on the gas in the fourth as Taussig managed to drive in T. Hodge who reached on a double, his second of the day. With Miller, Whitt Joyce and Taussig on the basepaths, Ballin hit a single to the shortstop which scored Taussig.

The Roadrunners opened the fifth up 8-2, they then hit back-to-back singles to put two aboard. Sadler was the next man up as he went on to hit a single to center field that scored Detlefsen.

With T. Hodge standing on third, Joyce managed to drive him home on a flyout to right field allowing T. Hodge to score. With bases loaded once again, Ballin was walked, scoring Sadler and putting UTSA up 11-2.

In the top of the sixth, Texas Southern managed to add three runs on a ground out and two RBI singles. Detlefsen was walked to lead off the sixth inning, he stole second and then was advanced to third on a fly out. Sadler was able to score Detlefsen as he flied out to right field.

In the eighth, the Roadrunners extended their lead to 14-5 as Detlefsen singled through the left side, scoring Lytle who reached on a fielder’s choice. After two singles, UTSA had bases loaded for N. Hodge as he would hit another single that scored Detlefsen.

Kendall Dove, who came into the game in the top of the eighth, shut Texas Southern out in the top of the ninth, ending the game 14-5. Dove tossed two perfect innings with two strikeouts.
