SAN ANTONIO – The student section at all UTSA home athletics events will now have a new identity. Following a week-long vote by the student body, The Birdcage has been selected as the official name for the high-energy student section where Roadrunners rule, it was announced Thursday.
UTSA students will have a dedicated section at all home ticketed sporting events that will be branded The Birdcage with a number of new elements incorporated for student engagement.
The Birdcage is a name that has been synonymous with UTSA venues over the history of the athletics program, including references to the UTSA Tennis Center and the Convocation Center as The Birdcage. That proud tradition will carry over to a raucous student section in all venues.
“The support of our students is critical to the success of our UTSA Athletics teams,” UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos said. “Our student-athletes love playing in front of their peers and the energy that our student body creates makes our teams hard to beat at home. We are excited to provide an enhanced student experience at our games this upcoming season with the introduction of The Birdcage.”
Thanks in part to the support of UTSA students, the UTSA Football program went 6-0 in the Alamodome last season and the Roadrunners are 29-3 at home since the arrival of head coach Jeff Traylor. In the Convocation Center this season, UTSA teams were 27-15, including a perfect 13-0 mark for the women’s basketball program. The Roadrunners’ baseball program is currently 17-1 at home.
A student section t-shirt design contest and a program to identify student leaders for The Birdcage will be announced in the coming days and weeks.
