SAN ANTONIO – Fulfilling the important mission of telling student-athlete stories and helping student-athletes build their personal brands, the UTSA Athletics strategic communications team has told more than 100 in-depth stories of the Roadrunners’ during the 2024-25 academic year through a variety of mediums, in addition to regular daily coverage of UTSA’s 17 sport programs.
This week, UTSA Athletics has earned recognition for its storytelling work during the 2024-25 season from Sports Video Group and for the 2024 calendar year from College Sports Communicators.
Four videos produced by the UTSA Athletics team were named finalists for the 2025 Sports Video Group College Sports Media Awards, it was announced Tuesday. Those videos will be considered by a panel of judges who will determine the national winners in each category and make the announcement at the SVG College Summit in Atlanta on May 28.
Two videos were recognized as the finalists in the Outstanding Social Media Collegiate Athletics Championship Category: The creative reveal of the UTSA soccer program’s black jerseys in advance of its match at Toyota Field with UIW produced by Jake Rosas and the Homefield apparel launch video produced by Rosas and Dylan Trevino with contributions from Jacob Hernandez and Katie Meyers. In large part due to the launch video, UTSA was the No. 1 selling school in Homefield’s Summer 7 launch collection of 2024.
Two videos were named finalists in the Outstanding In-Venue Video Collegiate Athletics Championship Category: The 2024 UTSA Football Intro Video produced by Rosas and the 2024-25 UTSA Men’s Basketball Intro Video produced by Trevino.
For the second consecutive year, staff members from UTSA will present on a panel at the SVG College Summit. This year, Director of Sports Production Elliott Greisen, Production Assistant Aaron Magill and Meyers, Assistant Athletics Director for Creative Services, will host a panel entitled Inside the Control Room: UTSA’s New ESPN+ Live Production Facility on May 28 in Atlanta. Last May, Meyers was a panelist on a session focused on Tools of the Trade: How the Latest in Cameras, Graphics, Replay, Encoders and Audio are Enhancing Our Live Broadcasts.
The College Sports Communicators Fred Stabley Sr., Writing Contest has honored three stories written by Sean Cartell, Senior Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Communications. District winners advance to the national ballot, with national winners in each of the seven categories to be announced later this month.
A profile of former UTSA Track & Field student-athletes Marissa and Melody Espinoza, detailing their inspiring story of perseverance through abuse in their teen years, was named the Best in District 6 - Athlete Profile. A feature on UTSA Athletics supporter Patty Espenhover and her courageous battle with stage-four breast cancer was named Best in District 6 – General Feature / Blog. A spotlight on former UTSA track & field student-athlete Darryl Wyrick and his lasting legacy of implementing a student-athlete stoll for Roadrunners Graduates was recognized as District 6 Runner-Up – Historical Feature.
Nationally, Cartell represents UTSA as the Vice Chair of the College Sports Communicators Advocacy Committee.
